Once the instructional design is complete, your training’s foundation is set. Now it is time to bring that vision to life visually.
This post is Part Five of our “What to Expect When You Work With MadXR” series, where we guide you through every stage of our immersive training process from the first discovery call to the final delivery.
At this point in the journey, our 3D Artists take the storyboard and design concepts and begin transforming them into dynamic, realistic, and visually engaging learning environments.
1. What Does a 3D Artist Do in Immersive Training?
3D Artists are the visual storytellers behind your training experience.
Their job is to turn ideas, sketches, and references into the detailed environments, objects, and characters that learners interact with.
At MadXR, our 3D Artists collaborate directly with the Instructional Designers and Developers to ensure every visual element supports the learning objectives and feels authentic to your real world environment.
2. Understanding Your Environment
Every project begins with research. Our artists study your workspace, products, or equipment to capture the details that make your environment unique.
We gather reference photos, blueprints, or even site scans to ensure accuracy. The goal is not just realism. It is recognizability. Learners should feel immediately familiar with the space they are in.
3. Building the World
Once references are approved, our 3D Artists begin creating the virtual world piece by piece.
This process includes
Modeling objects, tools, and environments
Applying realistic textures and lighting
Ensuring scale and spatial accuracy
Optimizing assets for performance and headset compatibility
Whether it is a factory floor, a retail setting, or a construction site, every element is built with purpose to immerse the learner in a believable, functional space.
A Helpful Note About Cost Efficiency: Many clients initially want every single piece of equipment modeled. While that is understandable, it is often unnecessary. At MadXR, we always return to the learning objectives first. We help you identify which objects and tools are truly essential for skill development, decision making, and performance outcomes.
By modeling only what your learners need to interact with, we keep your project focused, efficient, and cost effective. This approach maintains clarity for the learner while saving significant production time and budget for your organization.
For example: When we created a restaurant drive thru training experience, the client did not actually need a full restaurant modeled. They did not need the dining room, the entire kitchen, or all back of house equipment. To meet the learning objective, which was helping employees practice drive thru interactions, we only needed the exterior lane, the drive thru window, and the interior counter space where employees work.
This kept production streamlined, reduced costs, and kept learners focused on the exact skills they were meant to practice.
MadXR’s 3D Art Process
At MadXR, we follow a professional high to low poly 3D modeling workflow to ensure every asset looks amazing while still performing smoothly inside AR, VR, and WebGL experiences.
For anyone new to 3D modeling, here is what that means.
We begin by creating a high poly model, which is a very detailed version of an object with all the small curves, textures, and surface features sculpted in. This version is too heavy to use in real time environments, but it lets us capture all the realism we need.
From there, we create a low poly model, a highly optimized version with far fewer polygons, designed specifically for performance on standalone VR headsets, mobile devices, and browsers.
We then bake the details from the high poly model into the low poly version using normal maps and texture maps, giving you high end visual quality without sacrificing speed or responsiveness.
This expertise is essential in AR and VR development. You cannot simply drop a TurboSquid model or raw CAD file into a headset and expect good results. Those models are often far too dense, unoptimized, and lack proper UVs or textures for real time rendering. Without optimization, experiences lag, visuals break, and performance drops especially on standalone devices like Meta Quest or in Web based AR.
MadXR’s 3D art pipeline ensures every asset is purpose built for immersive technology, blending visual fidelity with real time performance so your AR and VR experiences run smoothly, look polished, and feel professional.
4. Creating Realism and Engagement
Visual realism enhances engagement, but the goal is not always photorealism. Our artists adjust the visual style based on the learning goals.
Sometimes a stylized environment helps focus attention on key actions, while other times high fidelity realism helps build confidence in a real world task.
Every decision from lighting to color palette supports the story your training needs to tell.
5. Collaboration and Feedback
The 3D Art team works closely with you throughout the process. We share environment previews, character concepts, and object renders for review.
This ensures your brand, safety standards, and technical requirements are reflected in every detail before the assets move into development.
6. Preparing for Development
Once finalized, all 3D assets are packaged and optimized for use in the next stage: Development.
Our developers then integrate these assets into the interactive experience, adding motion, animation, and functionality.
This seamless handoff between design, art, and development keeps production efficient and consistent.
7. What Comes Next
With the 3D assets complete, your project moves into the Development Phase, where everything comes to life through interactivity, logic, and feedback systems.
In Part Six of our “What to Expect When You Work With MadXR” series, we will explore how our Developers turn the visuals and design into a fully functioning immersive experience.
